To evoke (ex-vocare): to bring forth by the voice.
Commissioned by Noirlac, this work evokes Saint Benedict, whom the monks invoked. It unfolds in seven sequences the stages of his life, from Nursia to Monte Cassino, half-real, half-legendary (The Golden Legend of J. de Voragine attributes many wonders to him).
It evokes a period when men, surrounded by animals (wild boars, bears, wolves), began to forget the ancient gods and place themselves beneath a more abstract sky.
Two voices blend here: that of a narrator who weaves together the saint’s exploits, and the singing of the choirs, which echoes the ancient language and the images of poets (The Bible, Prudence, Hélinand de Froidmont, Pernette du Guillet, and Rabelais).
A sonic evocation… A journey through time. Gérald Castéras

It was first and foremost Gérald Castéras’s text, so beautiful in its diverse evocations and so powerful in its conciseness, that guided me in the composition of this ensemble. Then, throughout my work, I constantly resonated with Noirlac Abbey and its magnificent refectory. I wanted each tableau to have its own unique color, as the words invited me to: women’s choir, men’s choir, mixed choir, spoken choir, the narrator’s spoken voice as if hovering above the singing voices… to which I added small touches of percussion between them, both to assist the performers but also to fine-tune the ensemble with the brilliance of the crystalline tones of a glockenspiel, the depth of the tubular bells, and the rhythm of the drum. For the final scene, I added a recording of the European golden oriole present in the Noirlac bocage, which overlaps with the choir’s voices, further expanding the space above and all around us. Evoquer (ex-vocare) : faire surgir par la voix.
Commande de Noirlac, cette œuvre évoque Saint Benoît que les moines invoquaient. Elle déroule en sept séquences les étapes de sa vie, de Nursie au Mont Cassin, mi-réelle, mi-légendaire (La légende dorée de J. de Voragine lui prêtera quantité de prodiges).
Elle évoque une période où les hommes, entourés d’animaux (sangliers, ours, loups), commencent à oublier les anciens dieux pour se placer sous un ciel plus abstrait.  Deux voix se mêlent ici : celle d’une récitante qui tresse les exploits du saint, et le chant des chœurs qui fait sonner l’ancienne langue et les images des poètes (La Bible, Prudence, Hélinand de Froidmont, Pernette du Guillet ou Rabelais). C’est tout d’abord le texte si beau dans ses diverses évocations et si fort dans sa concision de Gérald Castéras qui m’a guidé dans la composition de cet ensemble. Puis, tout au long de mon travail, je n’ai cessé de me mettre en résonance avec l’abbaye de Noirlac et son magnifique réfectoire. J’ai souhaité que chaque tableau ait une couleur propre, comme les mots m’y invitaient: choeur de femmes, choeur d’hommes, choeur mixte, choeur parlé, voix parlée de la récitante comme planant au-dessus des voix chantées… auxquels j’ai ajouté de petites touches de percussions entre eux, à la fois pour aider les interprètes mais aussi pour ciseler l’ensemble par la brillance des sonorités cristallines d’un glockenspiel, la profondeur des cloches tubulaires et le rythme du tambour. Pour le dernier tableau , j’ai ajouté un enregistrement du loriot d’Europe présent dans le bocage de Noirlac qui vient se superposer aux voix du choeur, agrandissant encore l’espace au-dessus et tout autour de nous.  A noter que les percussions et le chant d’oiseau sont ad libitum.
