Seasongs I, II, III – 1, 2 or 3 mixed choir a cappella

text: Jean-Christophe Rosaz
duration circa 6’30

Author’s note: Sea Songs I, II, and III are three versions of the « same » piece of music, written with increasing complexity. We
suggest the following for each: Sea Song I—20 to 40 choristers; Sea Song II—16 to 40 choristers; Sea Song III—8 (or up to
16) mixed voices. In these three scores, the words are of secondary importance; the work is essentially a « marine symphony »
for vocal ensemble, requiring careful attention to sound texture—always keeping in mind the image of a wondrous school of
fish swimming in the open sea.

You may choose number I, II, or III, or combine them in pairs or by adding them together. If two or three choirs are used, care should be taken to space them sufficiently apart, with the audience positioned between them as much as possible.

l’oiseau s’envole

Here is the sea at last, so blue
and seemingly calm
a single wave (a wave, just one wave)
Oh wave (Oh what a wave, and what a wave)
Ah!
and then another
oh two waves (oh waves)
out there in the distance on the sea
And the sea is so blue (of such a deep blue)
over the sea a/ the bird takes flight
over the sea in the distance
it speeds through the wind
into the light in the distance
faster than light
a light in the distance
does a thought come to you
in the distance
oh beautiful bird
faster than light
taking flight seabird
to the far distance
where?
do you hear the bird’s song
oh do you hear its song?
far away on the sea
the bird takes flight
