Ave Maria – for equal voices a cappella
This is a kind of litany as practiced by the pilgrims of the various religious traditions who repeat untiringly a word, a name, here « Ave Maria ».
The work begins by simple prayer as we can hear in popular music. However, a catching 7-beat rhythm sets in, inciting to be under way (at least internally) a cluster – the real core of the composition – such as a bell that rings, a ray of light through a stained glass window, projects the interpreter and the listener into another dimension, up there in the sky …
There is no alteration, as if I did not rightly wish to alter this primordial color, but it is in polyrhythm and the fluidity of counterpoint that hide its riches.
The piece is traversed by a great crescendo – until the name of « Jesus » is invoked in the heart of the score – which then gradually falls as if he covered all the living with its mildness.
The various possible paths which are available to the interpreters allow choosing the duration.

Voici une sorte de litanie comme la pratiquent les pèlerins des diverses traditions religieuses qui répètent inlassablement un mot, un nom, ici « Ave Maria ».
L’œuvre commence par une simple prière comme on peut en entendre dans la musique populaire. Cependant qu’un rythme envoûtant à 7 temps s’installe, incitant à se mettre en route (du moins intérieurement), un cluster – le véritable noyau de la composition – telle une cloche qui tinte, un rayon de lumière à travers un vitrail, projette l’interprète et l’auditeur dans une autre dimension, là-haut dans le ciel…
Il n’y a pas d’altération, comme si justement je ne souhaitais pas altérer cette couleur primordiale, mais c’est dans la polyrythmie et la fluidité du contrepoint que se cachent ses richesses.
La pièce est parcourue par un grand crescendo – jusqu’à l’invocation du nom de « Jésus » au cœur de la partition – qui retombe ensuite progressivement comme si ce dernier recouvrait tous les vivants de sa mansuétude.
Les divers chemins possibles qui s’offrent aux interprètes permettent d’en choisir la durée.
