Description
I – Ой, у гаю при Дунаю / Oï ou gayou pry Dunayou / In the woods, near the Danube / Au bois, près du Danube
In the woods, by the Danube,
the nightingale sings,
calling all her own,
all her little ones to the nest.
Oh-tioh-tioh and tioh-tioh-tioh,
the nightingale sings,
calling all her own,
all her little ones to the nest.
In the woods, by the Danube,
there the music plays,
the bass rumbles, the violin weeps,
my beloved is having fun.
Oh-tioh-tioh and tioh-tioh-tioh,
there the music plays,
the bass rumbles, the violin weeps,
my beloved is having fun.
In the woods, by the Danube,
I sigh in my loneliness,
I weep, I moan, I sob,
my beloved, far from me.
Oh-tioh-tioh and tioh-tioh-tioh,
the nightingale sings,
calling all her own,
all her little ones to the nest.

II – Десь тут була / Podolyanotchka / Somewhere was a young girl / Quelque part ici se trouvait une jeune fille
Somewhere here stood a young girl from Podolia,
Somewhere here stood a very young maiden.
There she sat,
There she fell,
Bent over to the ground,
For seven years she did not wash,
Because she had no water.
« Arise, arise, young girl from Podolia,
Arise, arise, very young maiden!
Wash your pretty face,
Your white face,
Run to the Dniester,
Take a young girl,
Take the one who is off to the side! »

III – Ой ходить сон / Oi hodyt’ son Oï / The sleep wanders / Le sommeil se promène
Oh, sleep passes by the windows,
And drowsiness — by the fence.
Sleep asks drowsiness:
—Where shall we spend the night?
—Where the little house is warm and cosy,
Where the child is tiny, —
That’s where we’ll spend the night,
To rock the little child.
Oh, for the cat, the purring,
For the child, sleep,
The cat will purr,
And the child will sleep.

IV – Ой, там на горі / Oj tam na hori / Up there on the mountain / Là-haut sur la montagne
Up on the mountain
Up on the mountain,
Up on the hill,
Two white doves had landed,
Two white doves had landed.
They stood side by side,
They stood side by side,
Entangling each other with their gray wings,
Entangling each other with their gray wings.
But then a hunter appeared,
From behind the high mountains,
And he separated the pair of doves,
And he separated the pair of doves.
The dove no longer eats,
The dove no longer drinks,
And yet, she climbs the high hill,
To weep, to weep for her lost love.
