En revenant des noces, j’étais bien fatigué.
Au bord d’une fontaine, je me suis reposé.
Cette eau était si claire, je me suis bien baignée.
A la feuille d’un chêne, je me suis bien séchée

A la plus haute branche, le rossignol chantait.
Ne chante pas pour elle car son coeur à lui est bien gai.
Mon coeur n’est pas de même, il est bien affligé.
Pour un bouton de rose, que ma mie m’a refusé.

Voudrais que la rose fût encor’ au rosier!

Returning from the wedding, I was very tired.
I rested by a fountain.
The water was so clear, I bathed well.
I dried myself well by an oak leaf.

The nightingale sang on the highest branch.
Don’t sing for her, for her heart is very cheerful.
My heart is not the same; it is very sad.
For a rosebud, which my sweetheart refused me.

Would I wish the rose were still on the rosebush!
