Caritas – SATB a cappella
music : Hildegard von Bingen, Jean-Christophe Rosaz
In memoriam Hildegard von Bingen
duration around: 2’30
I drew free inspiration from this magnificent composition by Hildegard von Bingen, seeing where her music might lead me, and extending it as a respectful greeting across the centuries—a greeting filled with love, for that is its very subject.
I opted for a simplified notation to provide a more accessible score, freely adopting the rhythm, reinventing it.
Description
Caritas habundat in omnia, de imis excellentissima super sidera atque amantissima in omnia, quia summo regi osculum pacis dedit.
Love abounds in all, from the depths exalted and excelling over every star, and most beloved of all, for to the highest King the kiss of peace it gave.
L’amour abonde en toute chose, des profondeurs jusqu’au-dessus des astres, aimant à l’infini toute chose car au Roi Très-Haut il donna le baiser de paix
Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179), a German Benedictine nun, was a polymath—an abbess, mystic, visionary, illustrator, composer, poet, and founder—as well as a prominent figure during the zenith of monastic medicine in the late Early Middle Ages.
